GREENPOINT

Greenpoint is an app I designed for my Design Principles II final project. Greenpoint was built upon a research project also conducted in Design Principles II, in which I found an unmet need for students on urban campuses to have more interactions with green spaces. These findings led me to design Greenpoint, an app that gamifies interactions with green spaces in cities.

This project starts with parnter-conducted user research conducted on over fifty students from RISD and Brown University, followed by ideation, the accompanying app, and mockups for a branded marketing campaign.

Research

Upon researching the topic of green spaces and their relation to student wellness on campus, my research partner, Wesley Hackett, and I found that RISD students struggled to find sufficient green spaces to use or engage with. Although Brown University is up the hill from our campus, we found that RISD students struggled to find green spaces they feel are theirs and are compelling to use.

Unfortunately, students cannot construct new campus sites. As green spaces have a direct positive impact on student mental health, I sought to create a way that RISD students, or any urban students, can reclaim the green spaces of their own cities.

Sketches & Ideation

My research findings inspired me to create a solution that would be widely accessible for all college students, thus being an app. My ideation process started with paper hand sketches, which I brought into more organized digital sketches, as seen above.

Landing & Homepage

Greenpoint incentivizes users to interact with local green spaces by rewarding users with points each time they do something “green”. The homepage of Greenpoint allows users to see the points they earned in a given week, as well as starting a daily Green Mission to earn more points. The bottom tab navigates to the Explore and Profile pages.

Activity & Claim Rewards

On the Activity page, users can track their monthly points, register for events, or upload photos to the Greenpoint user team. Users can redeem rewards on the Claim Rewards page once they have earned enough points.

Explore & Profile

The Explore page allows users to map to nearby green spaces or local events in which they can earn points. They can toggle to the Profile page to edit their profile, look at saved events/spaces, or connect with other users.

Scan QR Code & Dwell Timer

The Scan QR Code page allows users to scan QR codes at local green spaces to record that they have completed an event or interacted with the green space. On the Dwell Timer page, users can log an activity such as a walk or meditation for a duration within a certain green space. All pages on the Greenpoint app are designed to make it easy and fun for users to earn points at green spaces.

Branding & Marketing

Our aim is for Greenpoint not to just be another app, but to be a recognizable movement through branding and marketing that makes interacting and taking care of our planet a fun and gamified activity.
